William M. “Duke” Hughes, 77, of Edwardsville, formerly of Wilkes-Barre and Hanover Township, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 in the VA Medical Center, Plains Township.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late William and Margaret J. McConologue Hughes and was a graduate of St. Leo's High School, Ashley. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during Vietnam and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Award, Good Conduct Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. He was very proud of his Military service and prior to retirement, he was a lineman for Bell Telephone.. Dukey was a member of St. Leo the Great Church, Ashley; enjoyed spending time with family and watching Penn State and the Cleveland Browns Football Games.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his son Brian Patrick Hughes and brothers, James and Matthew Hughes.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 55 years, married Sept. 12, 1969, Patricia Wallace Hughes; daughter Maureen (Michael) Kayrish of Wilkes-Barre; son Jason Hughes of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Gavin Hughes, Brady Hughes, Adam Kayrish, Avery Kayrish; sister Diane (Michael) Matthews of State College; nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be conducted on Monday, September 16, 2024 at 9:30 am from the Lehman Family Funeral Service, Inc. 689 Hazle Ave. Wilkes-Barre with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Leo the Great Church, 33 Manhattan Street, Ashley, with Reverend Long officiating. Entombment will follow, with military honors, in St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum, Hanover Township.
Friends are invited to join the family for a visitation Sunday, September 15, 2024 from 4 to 7 pm and Monday morning from 9:00 am until service time.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Leo's Church Building Fund, 33 Manhattan St. Ashley, PA 18706..
