Thorwald “Bud” Holmgren, 83, of the Newtown Section of Hanover Twp. passed away while vacationing with his family in Wildwood Crest N.J., Thursday August 12, 2021.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, on June 30, 1938 and was the son of the late Knut Thorwald and Marie A. Fischer Holmgren and Step Son of the late Aloysius Wenger. He attended St. Nicholas grade school and graduated from Coughlin High School, Class of 1956. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Antietam, 3 years Active Duty and 3 years in the Reserves. He was honorably discharged June 29, 1959 and was very active with the Navy Ship Reunions. He was retired from Acme Markets as a store manager.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Church in Wilkes-Barre, where he was a 45 year member and past President of the Holy Name Society where he was Chairman for the Annual Smoker and his favorite “German Nite”, and frequently planned trips to Atlantic City. He was a Gold Card Member and Financial Secretary of St. Conrad’s Young Men’s Society for 15 years.
After retirement, he began a 2nd career at St. Nicholas Church and School as custodian/cafeteria worker for 21 years, and worked at Lisman Funeral Home for 15 years. His best times were spent with his beloved family, going to the beach, and trips to Disney. Bud always had a smile and a story for everyone.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his Sister Bernadine Holmgren and his step brothers William, Frank & John (Jackie) Wenger & Brother-In-Law, Francis Kulah.
He is survived by the loves of his life: his devoted wife, Phyllis (Kulah) Holmgren, children: daughter, Holly (David) Nealon of Hanover Twp., Annette Holmgren of Harveys Lake, son, Paul (Mary) Holmgren of Hanover Township; brother, Carl (Sandra) Holmgren, of Hanover Twp. and sister in law, Genny Wenger of Kingston. He will be greatly missed by his adored grandchildren: Victoria, Luke & Grace Nealon; Heath, Daniel and Allison Jones; Paul, Brandon & Kyle Holmgren, Brothers-In-Law Richard (Gail) Kulah; Gary (Kathy) Kulah and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to join the family for a memorial visitation Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 8:30 am to 11:00 at St. Nicholas Church, 226 S Washington St Wilkes Barre, with a memorial mass of Christian burial to follow with the Reverend Brian Clarke and Reverend Joseph Verespy officiating. Interment will follow, with Military Honors in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
