Stewart Emery, 94, of Wilkes-Barre, PA and Palm Coast, FL; formerly of Ashley, died at the Gardens at East Mountain in Wilkes-Barre, on Monday, October 18, 2021.
Born on August 23, 1927, in the Lee Park section of Hanover Township, he was the son of the late Harry C. and Margaret James Emery. Stewart graduated from the Veterans Program from Hanover High School; received his Associates Degree from S. California College of Watchmaking and Jewelry Repair in 1951 and joined the Navy during World War II. He began his career with the VA as a guard at the Supply Depot in Long Beach, California, where he was promoted to chief inventory clerk for a 1600 bed hospital. He relocated to the Wilkes-Barre VA where he became a Nursing Assistant and LPN, for 27 ½ years.
Stewart was a very active member of St. Leo's the Great Church in Ashley; was an Eucharistic Minister/Adult Server; President and member of the Holy Name Society; member and Worthy Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus #12089 and the Fourth Degree of Knights Bishop Wm. J. Haley Assembly.
Stewart was very active in sports and was an avid fan of the NY Yankees and Wilkes Barre Scranton Yankees. He was a PIAA Baseball Umpire; President Wyoming Valley Umpires Association; Vice President Teeners Association of Wyoming Valley; coached Ashley Teeners to a Championship; umpired in the following leagues: Georgetown Little League, North End Little League, Valley Teeners, Senior Teeners of Wyoming Valley and Back Mountain; High School (Wyoming Conference), Sunday Ball (Semi Pro of Wyoming Valley League and The Tri-County Baseball League and PIAA Baseball Umpire (President Wyoming Valley Umpires Association and Vice President Teeners Association of Wyoming Valley). He also was a PIAA Basketball official I.A.A.B.O Wyoming Valley Chapter; officiated in the following: Eighth Grade Leagues for the Sunday Games; Industrial Leagues, fundraising at various high schools, worked at the Wilkes-Barre Red Baron games, workouts at Kingston Armory, high school and junior high school varsity games and coached high school division teams at the CYC, Wilkes-Barre for 3 years. He was in charge of public relations for the Anthracite Football Bowl. Stewart's favorite past-time was doing jigsaw puzzles (the harder the better) and giving them to family and friends. He was married to Rita Palladio for 58 years and following her death married Molly Kerrigan of Wilkes-Barre. After their retirement, Stewart and Molly spent half a year in Pennsylvania and half a year in Florida; they had the best of both worlds.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rita in 2006; brothers, Henry and William Emery and daughter-in-law-Patricia Emery.
He is survived by his wife, Molly Kerrigan; son, Anthony "Rick" (fiancee, Eileen Pisonick of Wilkes-Barre) Emery of Ashley; Grandchildren: Kristen (Tony) Zigmont of West Wyoming and Leslie Goyne of Willowbrook, IL; niece, Karen (Lou) Morelli; cousin, Jean Elias and many extended family members and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 22, 2021, at 9:30 am from the Lehman Family Funeral Home, Inc., 689 Hazle Avenue, Wilkes-Barre with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am from St. Leo the Great Parish, 33 Manhattan Street, Ashley. Reverend Vincent Dang will officiate. Interment will follow with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends are invited to join the family on Thursday evening, from 5 to 7 pm and again on Friday morning, from 9:00 am until time of service.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent care given to Stewart by the VA Hospital, the Gardens at East Mountain in Wilkes-Barre and Dr. Mouallem of Nanticoke, PA
