Raymond J. McElligott, affectionately known as "Rainbow," of Hanover Township, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the age of 95.
Raymond proudly served his country in both the United States Navy and Army during the Korean Conflict. Throughout his service, he earned numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart Medal, the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Stars, the Army Occupation Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the National Defense Service Medal. His dedication to his country and his bravery during one of history's most challenging conflicts will never be forgotten.
In civilian life, Raymond was a dedicated and hardworking member of the Hanover Township Road Department, where he served as a truck driver for many years. He was also an active and devoted member of the former Holy Family Church in Sugar Notch, and a proud participant in local church and fire bazaars.
Raymond’s commitment to his community extended beyond his work and faith. He was deeply involved in Hanover Township's fire service, where he held many roles, including past president of the Luzerne County Fire Chiefs Association, past president of the Hanover Township Relief Association, and president and Fire Chief of the Preston Hose Company #3. He was also a valued member of the Hanover Township Fire Department, selflessly contributing to the safety and well-being of his neighbors and friends.
Raymond’s leadership and passion for public service left a lasting impact on the community. Whether in the firehouse, at the church bazaar, or on the road as a driver, he was a figure of strength, compassion, and dedication.
Rainbow was preceded in death by his mother Katherine Deats, stepfather Roy Deats, stepsister Ruth Kenick and stepbrother Lee Deats.
He is survived by his fiancée Dorothy Zakrzewski, daughter Mary Jane McElligott; step siblings, Claire Deats, Catherine Deats, Elene Honeywell, Theresa Williams and Patrick Deats and many nieces and nephews.
