John J. Mahle, Jr. 67, of Newtown section of Hanover Township, passed away suddenly, late on Monday, August 14, 2023 in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, with family by his side.
Born in Kingston, he was the son of the late John J. Mahle Sr. and Dolores Altavilla Mahle and was a graduate of Hanover High School, Class of 1973. John served his country for 23 years in the United States Army, retiring as Staff Sergeant and was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal; Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. He was a foreman for the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority and was involved in Hanover Township Politics. John was the chairman and president of the Hanover Area School District Board of Education for 25 years, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed playing golf. He was very active in the community over his lifetime; was past president and coach of the Ashley/Newtown Little League and of the Hanover Mini Hawks. He was past president of the Hanover Area Quarterback Club; was past vice commander of the Italian American War Veterans and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. John was also active in the Ed/Lark community; was the Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical JOC Chairman. John was also a chairman of the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority Board and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss, is his loving wife of 47 years, Karen Perugino Mahle; sons, John Mahle and his wife, Jeanine of Larksville Mountain, Stephen Mahle and his wife Melissa of Hanover Township; daughter, Vanessa Buckley of Hanover Township; grandchildren, Kiana and John IV; sister, Bonita Mahle of Kingston; nieces and nephews and many friends.
Private funeral services will be held from the Lehman Family Funeral Service Inc. 689 Hazle Ave. Wilkes-Barre with Reverend Gavitt officiating. Interment with Military Honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
