Irene R. Miller

Irene R. Miller passed away peacefully on August 22, while in hospice care at the VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA. 

Irene was born in April 1934 to Joseph and Annetta Laburda.  She attended Nanticoke High School when on her 18th birthday, she and a good friend joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  Irene didn’t cross any stage to receive her high school diploma, instead headed to basic training. She was tested and received that diploma 2 months before her fellow classmates. 

After her years of military service, Irene married John Miller, Jr., of New York City. Her husband still had a year of military service remaining, so their first year of marriage was spent on an Air Force base in New Mexico. The couple eventually made Warrior Run in Northeastern Pennsylvania their home.

Irene attended Empire Beauty School and later owned and operated her own salon until her two children were old enough to stay home alone after school. Irene later left home before her children were up and ready for school to join a carpool driving up the mountain for her shift at the American Cigar factory. Ten years later, Irene took a civil service examination and accepted a position at the library inside the VA Medical Center. She loved her job and did not retire until she was 67 years old.

Irene is now at peace.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, their son, Jeff, one grandson, Jason and her siblings.

Surviving is her daughter, Lisa Miller, along with her granddaughter, Brittany Yeager, grandson Ryan Miller, and other members of the family.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 12:30 pm from Lehman Family Funeral Service, Inc., 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre. Entombment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township with Military Honors

Friends may call Wednesday morning from 11:30 am until the time of service at the funeral home.

Irene will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
