Catherine T. Melan, RN, 97, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, with family by her side, at Allied Services, Meade Street.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Malarkey Ryan and was a graduate of St. Mary's High School. She continued her education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital. She also worked at Social Security Administration, as a resident nurse from 1973 until 1991. Family was the most cherished part of Catherine's life as well as her deep religious faith. Mom, was the consummate caregiver to all who called upon her, she was there for everyone. She was a member of St. Andrew's Parish, St. Patrick's Church, Wilkes-Barre.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Melan; sons, Donald “DJ” and Timothy Melan; daughter, Arline Kennedy; siblings, Mary Ryan, Ruth Edwards, Leo Ryan, and sister-in-law Joan Lerch.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Molly McGavin and her husband, Mike of Hanover Township; son Robert Melan and his wife, Lynn, Sarasota, FL; and son-in-law, Robert Kennedy, Shavertown; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, Arline Jennings of Philadelphia, sister-in-law, Jane Summerfold, Florida and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be conducted on Friday, February 12, 2021, at 9:30 am from Lehman Family Funeral Service, Inc. 689 Hazel Ave. Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Andrew's Parish, Parrish St. Wilkes-Barre at 10:00 am with Reverend Leo McKernan officiating.
Friends are invited to join the family for a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 11, 2021, and Friday morning from 9:00 AM until time of church service.
The family would like to give their sincere thanks to the staff at Little Flower/Allied for their compassionate care given to our mom during her stay, including her time at St. Theresa.
