The only son of Carl and Mae Filbert of Hazelton, PA. At just 11 months old, his mother died from Leukemia and was subsequently adopted by his maternal grandparents, Martin and Dora Gernhart, and given their name.
Carl is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia (Mark) Tarleton; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey (Debra) Gernhart and grandchildren, Jonathan and Sarah Gernhart. Carl’s wife Helen preceded him in death in 1982.
Carl was very active at the Hazleton High School as an actor and a member of the Stage Crew. In the late 1950’s he became founder and first President of the Pottstown Little Theater which was his main pastime along with going to the movies.
Carl held many occupations throughout his life. One he was most proud and honored to be was a driver for the Volunteers of America. He loved his clients and they also loved him!
Carl was also an animal lover, especially dogs. His last dog, Koko, was his closest companion as they were together for 13 years 24/7.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, July 13th from 12:30-2:30 at Lehman Family Funeral Service, Inc., 689 Hazle St. Wilkes-Barre, PA. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
